Airport Information: What To Check Before You Fly

Which terminal, and is it the one you think

Large airports move airlines between terminals more often than travelers expect. Check the terminal on the day rather than relying on a previous trip, especially where terminals are connected by a shuttle bus rather than a walkway.

If you are connecting between terminals, add the shuttle time to your mental plan. At some airports that is five minutes, at others it is closer to forty.

Minimum connection times

Every airport publishes a minimum connection time, and it differs for domestic to domestic, domestic to international, and international to international transfers. It is a useful sanity check when you are choosing between itineraries.

Treat the published figure as the absolute floor, not a comfortable target. If your connection is close to it, an on time arrival becomes essential rather than nice to have.

Getting there and back

Look up at least two ways to reach the airport. Rail links tend to be predictable, road transfers are not, and the difference matters most for early morning departures when public transport may not have started yet.

For the return, check the last departure of the train or bus. Landing at 23:40 in an unfamiliar city is a lot more relaxed when you already know the plan.

• Approximate taxi or rideshare cost at your travel time
• Where rideshare pickup actually happens, it is often not the arrivals door
• Parking pre booking if you are driving

Facilities that are worth checking

If you are traveling with children, with reduced mobility, or with a long layover, the airport website usually lists family rooms, assistance meeting points, quiet areas and shower facilities. These are the details that make a five hour layover tolerable.

Also check opening hours. Smaller airports close large parts of the terminal overnight, which is a surprise nobody enjoys at 3am.

Security and documents

Rules on liquids, electronics and footwear vary between countries and sometimes between airports in the same country. A quick look at the airport's own security page is more reliable than remembering what happened last time.

For international travel, confirm passport validity requirements and any entry paperwork well before the day of travel, since those are checked at the airline counter, not just at the border.
