Budget Travel: Getting More From Your Trip
Most travel budget advice focuses on the flight, but the flight is often not where the money goes. Accommodation length, food habits and ground transport usually make a bigger difference over a week.

Flexibility is the biggest lever
Shifting a departure by one or two days often changes the fare more than any booking trick. Midweek departures and early morning or late evening flights tend to be cheaper.
If your dates are fixed, flexibility on the airport can do the same job. A secondary airport with a good rail link is often worth checking.
Cheap options that are not cheap
A low fare with a far away airport, a 06:00 departure requiring a taxi, and a checked bag added at the gate can easily exceed the higher fare you rejected.
Compare the total: fare, bags, seat selection if you need it, transfers at both ends, and any night of accommodation the timing forces on you.
- Fare plus bags plus seat selection
- Transfer cost at both airports
- Extra hotel night caused by flight times
- Food during long layovers
Stay longer in fewer places
Every move costs money: transport, a night that is half wasted, and usually a meal out. Fewer bases means a lower total even if the accommodation itself is not cheaper.
Weekly rates on apartments are frequently much lower per night than nightly rates, which rewards staying put.
Food is where the daily budget goes
Breakfast in the accommodation and one main meal out is a simple pattern that cuts costs substantially without feeling like restriction.
Lunch menus at good restaurants are often far cheaper than the same kitchen in the evening, which is one of the better value habits in travel.
Destinations where your money goes further
Central and Eastern Europe, parts of Southeast Asia, Portugal outside Lisbon, and much of Latin America all offer strong value, though prices in tourist centres have risen.
Off season travel to expensive destinations can cost less than peak season travel to cheap ones, so compare both approaches before deciding.
