Europe
Southern Europe in Shoulder Season
For most travelers the Mediterranean is better in May, June, September and early October than it is in August. The weather is still good, the crowds thin considerably, and prices drop across flights and accommodation.

What shoulder season actually means
Roughly the weeks either side of peak summer. Exact timing varies by country, but late April to mid June and September to mid October covers most of the region.
Sea temperatures lag the air, so September and early October are usually better for swimming than May, even though the air temperature can be similar.
Where it makes the biggest difference
Places that are uncomfortably busy in August become pleasant. Dubrovnik, Santorini, the Amalfi Coast, Venice and central Barcelona are all noticeably easier outside peak weeks.
The change is less dramatic in larger cities that have year round visitors, though prices still fall.
- Croatia: Dalmatian coast in late May or September
- Greece: islands in June or early October
- Italy: Puglia and Sicily in May, lakes in September
- Spain: Andalusia in April, Balearics in late September
What to watch for
Some seasonal businesses on smaller islands close outside the main months, and ferry schedules thin out. This matters most for island hopping itineraries.
Check ferry timetables before booking accommodation on multiple islands, since the connection you assume exists may only run in July and August.
Flights
Seasonal routes start and end at slightly different times each year. A direct flight that existed last September might not operate this year, so check current schedules rather than relying on memory.
Fares are usually lowest in the first weeks after peak season ends, which is often the best value window of the entire year.
Practical planning
Bring a light layer for the evenings, particularly in spring and at altitude. Days can be warm while evenings are cool enough to notice.
Book restaurants less far ahead than in summer, but still book the notable ones. Shoulder season is quieter, not empty.
